Donor Dominance Theory

Theoretically, it is yes hair transplant is permanent but I will also need to explain to you one theory which is called as “Donor Dominance Theory“. The reason behind the permanent of FUE hair transplant is what is donor dominance theory? As you might know that in androgenetic alopecia the cause behind the hair loss is the hormone named DHT( dihydrotestosterone), hairs at the top of our scalp are usually sensitive to the DHT so prone to hair loss and on the contrary hairs on the back of the scalp and body hairs like beard and chest don’t have receptors for DHT hormone so can’t be loose.

So according to this theory of donor dominance when hairs from the donor area that is back of the scalp and body hairs are transferred to the recipient area that is top of the scalp can’t be lost again “theoretically”

Recipient Dominance Theory:

But there is one more theory also which is gathering lot more buzz these days named “Recipient Dominance Theory” according to which 30% hairs may gain characteristics of hair of recipient area and may get affected by DHT and may lose. That is also one of the reasons that finasteride and minoxidil are highly advisable after the hair transplant. Though hairs from the donor area are resistant to the DHT hormone but only 20%.

So coming back to your question, ”is hair transplant permanent” but those hairs also have an effect of aging on them too in extreme old age you are most probably going to lose that transplanted hair too, but on average transplanted hair has an average age of around 25 years.
