Is PRP effective for hair loss
A lot of patients looking into hair loss treatments have this basic doubts when they approach the dermatologists or when it is suggested that they go for PRP. Since it is a newer treatment modality, not many people have heard about it and have their apprehensions. PRP is an adjunctive treatment therapy option and approved by the FDA to treat hair loss.
Hair loss is a cause of psychological distress and associated with low self-esteem issues and depression. But since the cause of hair loss, hair fall and hair thinning is varies from person to person, the treatment options also differ. Hence a combination therapy is usually preferred over monotherapy for maximum possible results.
Here is the video, where I have tried to explain the PRP treatment for hair loss in a better way.
Platelet-rich plasma for hair regrowth is effective, in – office, nonsurgical procedure. It is an autologous treatment derived from patient’s own blood. It can be performed in about an hour.
Basically, during the procedure, after the area of concern is identified, evaluated and measured, standardized medical photos are taken. Special gentle and sterile techniques and equipment are used to separate and concentrate the platelets and plasma from a small sample of blood taken from you.
With improved platelet concentration, PRP contains growth factors and cytokines that are responsible for stimulating and enhancing hair follicle function, for stronger and longer hair growth duration. Patients with areas of “weak quality” hair growth on the scalp, where functioning hair follicles can still be observed are ideal candidates for PRP. Treatment is repeated every 1 months for 4 sessions at least.
No activity restriction is advised after a PRP session. Patients may shower, shampoo and condition their hair normally, several hours after the treatment and may resume normal daily and athletic activities. No harsh chemical coloring or perming treatments should be done. Topical minoxidil can be resumed the next day.
It is a simple, cost-effective and feasible treatment option a valuable adjuvant treatment modality for hair loss management. Excellent safety profile and relatively low-cost are another added features. So, yes the answer to your question is, yes, PRP if done by a qualified dermatologist in a well-equipped setup is beneficial and very effective.
