Is PRP effective for hair loss

A lot of patients looking into hair loss treatments have this basic doubts when they approach the dermatologists or when it is suggested that they go for PRP. Since it is a newer treatment modality, not many people have heard about it and have their apprehensions. PRP is an adjunctive treatment therapy option and approved by the FDA to treat hair loss.

Hair loss is a cause of psychological distress and associated with low self-esteem issues and depression. But since the cause of hair loss, hair fall and hair thinning is varies from person to person, the treatment options also differ. Hence a combination therapy is usually preferred over mono-therapy for maximum possible results.

Here is the video, where I have tried to explain the PRP treatment for hair loss in a better way.

Platelet-rich plasma for hair regrowth is effective, in – office, nonsurgical procedure. It is an autologous treatment derived from patient’s own blood. It can be performed in about an hour.

Basically, during the procedure, after the area of concern is identified, evaluated and measured, standardized medical photos are taken. Special gentle and sterile techniques and equipment are used to separate and concentrate the platelets and plasma from a small sample of blood taken from you.

With improved platelet concentration, PRP contains growth factors and cytokines that are responsible for stimulating and enhancing hair follicle function, for stronger and longer hair growth duration. Patients with areas of “weak quality” hair growth on the scalp, where functioning hair follicles can still be observed are ideal candidates for PRP. Treatment is repeated every 1 months for 4 sessions at least.

No activity restriction is advised after a PRP session. Patients may shower, shampoo and condition their hair normally, several hours after the treatment and may resume normal daily and athletic activities. No harsh chemical coloring or perming treatments should be done. Topical minoxidil can be resumed the next day.

It is a simple, cost-effective and feasible treatment option a valuable adjuvant treatment modality for hair loss management. Excellent safety profile and relatively low-cost are other added features. So, yes the answer to your question is, yes, PRP if done by a qualified dermatologist in a well-equipped setup is beneficial and very effective.

Male Hair Loss

There are many reasons for hair loss in male ranging from genetics or family history of hair loss, daily or work life stress etc. Hair loss may be genetic or non-genetic. The following section briefs you about few top causes of hair loss and treatment for it.

The most important type of hair loss in males is male pattern baldness or Androgenetic Alopecia. Almost 70% to 80 % of males suffer from male pattern baldness. The main causes of hair loss in men are usually changing in eating habits or crash dieting, change in environment or stress induced due to work or personal reasons. HairMD- hair loss clinic in Pune, provides our patients with proven hair loss treatment which are based on 28+ years of successful clinical experience Dr Dhananjay Chavan, MBBS, DDV & proven medical research. The mainstay of treatment for male pattern hair loss is finasteride and minoxidil. Finasteride blocks the hormones i.e. 5 alpha reductase in the body which are responsible for hair loss. Minoxidil increases blood flow to the scalp and promotes hair growth in bald patches or spots. Apart from finasteride and minoxidil various procedures like platelet rich plasma therapy (PRP), mesotherapy, micro-needling (derma roller), low-level laser light therapy (LLLT) are some of the ways to treat hair loss.

In PRP for hair loss, concentrated growth factors are extracted from the blood of the patient and then transferred back to the scalp of the patient. In micro-needling (derma roller for hair loss treatment) thousands of micro punctures are created in patient’s scalp with the help of derma roller. These micro punctures result in the release of intrinsic growth factors at that site stimulate hair growth.

In low-level laser light therapy (LLLT), light from a cold laser (red laser waves) is delivered to the hair, this laser light stimulates the hair follicles for faster growth. This treatment is US FDA approved for hair loss problem. In mesotherapy growth peptides, plane stem cell extract and various other growth factors are delivered locally to our hair. All these treatment procedures along with medicine are responsible for the great results. We are able to give to our patients suffering from hair loss.
