Does DHT cause hair loss?

To know more about our own hair, we should know that we have 3 phases of hair growth. These phases are anagen, catagen, and telogen. In the anagen phase which is also called the growth phase. In this phase, our hair grows at least 2 to 6 years and stays for a longer duration. The catagen phase is also known as the transition stage, which lasts for just 2 to 3 weeks. The last phase is nothing but the telogen phase, which is known as the resting phase, in this period our hairs go dormant from 1 to 4  months.

What is DHT?

DHT also call as Dihydrotestosterone, which is the by-product of testosterone hormone and androgenic hormone. It has many roles to play apart from hair production. It also linked with prostate cancer and prostate glands too. DHT is a hormone that is responsible for male characteristics. It is seen in men that, 5 alpha-reductase enzyme converts testosterone into DHT. This then binds with the receptors and due to which the hair follicle starts shrinking, weakening and then eventually the hair roots fall and dies. When 5 alpha enzyme increases in our body, then more testosterone get convert into DHT. And in the end it will result in more hair loss.

Yes definitely, DHT is one of the reasons for hair loss. But DHT hormone is not responsible for all baldness. However, this hormone plays a vital role in men’s hair loss.
