Hormones are necessary to our body then why they cause hair loss?

Yes of course hormones are very much necessary for the normal functioning of our body that's why they are called as the elixirs of the human body. Because without the hormones our organs won't get any direction or order to function and we will collapse, but sometimes these hormones are secreted in less or larger amount due to various reasons and cause hazardous health effects. but not all hormones cause hair loss in female but some of them yes.

The hair fall in women is different than in men. Usually, Hormonal hair loss is thought to be the temporary type & can be treated & controlled if diagnosed correctly & at an early stage. Below are some of the causes that contribute to hair loss in all females right from teenagers to elders.

DHT Hormone –Main culprit!

Women also have DHT in traces amount. As similar to its action in male pattern baldness it also contributes in females.

  • Testosterone converts to DHT with the aid of the enzyme 5 – alpha reductase.
  • The level of DHT binding to receptors in scalp follicles mainly in the crown area.
  • DHT shrinks hair follicles making it impossible for healthy hair to survive.
  • The hormonal process of testosterone converting to DHT which harms hair follicles happens in both men & women.
  • Under normal conditions, women have a minute fraction of the level of testosterone that men have but even a comes level can cause DHT – triggered hair loss in women.

Thyroid related Hair loss:

Hair loss can also be caused by an imbalance of thyroid hormones. Hair fall or loss is also one of the main symptoms of hypothyroidism & paradoxically hypothyroidism. Thyroid hormones affect every well in the body including the cells of the hair follicle. Thyroid hormone prolongs the growth phase of hair cycle & inhibits spontaneous rest phase of the hair growth cycle. So low levels or very high levels of thyroid hormone cause the sudden onset of rest phase leading to hair loss.

Menopause related Hair loss:

Women’s hormone levels decline as menopause approaches & drop sharply during menopause & beyond. The level of oestrogen hormone goes down as ovaries which secrets oestrogen becomes unfunctional so ultimately hair loss happens.

Prolactin:

Prolactin produced by pituitary glands located at the base of the brain. So during pregnancy & breastfeeding, it is normal for prolactin levels to rise. Hyperprolactinemia can cause hair loss. Hyperprolactinemia and hypothyroidism can cause hair fall in the female.

Pregnancy:

After pregnancy, the estrogen level in the body of mother goes down, as a result hairs go in resting phase which makes them come out the scalp. It will happen generally after the 12 weeks of delivery.

Cortisol: Stress Hormone that can cause hair loss

High-Stress levels contribute to hair loss. Hair follicles respond to stress by turning off hair growth. Hyaluronan & proteoglycans are important to skin elements that are responsible for hair growth. High cortisol levels reduce synthesis accelerate the degradation of these two skin elements almost by 45% this leads to shortened growth cycle of hair consequent hair loss.

Positive co- relation between hair loss & insulin resistance. Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body’s cell become resistant to insulin due to multiple factors such as poor lifestyle choices with insulin resistance pancreas produce more insulin, blood sugar level rises. Elevated blood sugar levels lead to higher cortisol levels  & free radicals and high cortisol level, as seen earlier definitely associated with hair loss.

All of these reasons are treatable & hairs can be saved. We advise you to see a doctor for proper diagnosis & seek a proper medication & treatment. You can also read through this section or visit our page where you will find out more information on hair loss in ladies.
